There
are some lovely beaches (see the article on El Palmar with the recommendation
for the restaurant La Chanca or Restaurant Francisco). There
is the chiringuito at Caños de Meca) with a fantastic view back
over the bay to the lighthouse of Trafalgar (see article on Hotel Utopia
combined with a visit to Restaurant Sajorami at Playa Zahora, Caños
de Meca).
We
have a special suggestion - an interesting visit to El Palomar
de la Breña.
Take the N.340 direction Cadiz, pass the turning on your right for Medina
Sidona, and shortly after this you will see left turn for Vejer de la
Frontera, and also for Caños de Meca. Follow the road to Caños
de Meca. Follow the road direction Barbate, and take the turning on
your left for San Ambrosio. This goes into the pine forest. After a
short while you will see a sign for Palomar de La Breña.

El Palomar de la Brena ---
This
is now a Hacienda/hotel with a restaurant attached and is in a very
isolated spot with gorgeous views (except for the ten windmills now
visible - if more come it will take away much of the allure of
this location). Interesting wooden sculptures greet you, but the main
fascination of this place is the ruins of the world’s largest
dovecote adjoining the hacienda (free entrance via a door beside the
bar). Open daily from March onwards.
El
Palomar de la Breña housed some 10.000 doves in the early 18th
century, which were used as food for the crews of the ships bound for
America as they could be transported live. The chemical conditions were
such that the droppings produced saltpetre for the cannon fodder. The
ruins are in good condition and you can walk up and down the passages
and pass under the ancient archways; information is strategically placed.

We
then followed the road through the pine forest until we came to Barbate
where the new yacht club/restaurant is clearly visible (a dark red building).
Note: this is closed on Tuesdays.

About Zoë
and her guesthouse
Zoë
is the owner of Guesthouse Dar Cilla which is unique of its sort in Tarifa.
It is located on the outskirts of the old town within the old 12th century walls.
'Dar' is an Arabic word for a town house in which a series of suites are grouped
around a central courtyard. Each suite is fully independent, but there is a
pleasant air of 'sociability' and you will meet Zoë and fellow guests on
the roof terrace over a glass of wine.
