I’ve done this trip some 30 times or more. I still use our guide, albeit now as friends and only to help me with the formalities, and getting off and on the ferry, particularly if I am carrying anything more than light hand luggage (I am ALWAYS carrying more!).

Especially if you are going for the first time, PLEASE use our recommended guide.

Unfortunately the Customs Police etc. at the entrance to the ferry are not uniformed, their badges often half out of sight under dark overcoats (in most seasons!), they tend to be unshaven and wear dark glasses, all of which -however friendly they just might be- tends to make them look threatening; they exude an air of power. This can feel uncomfortable.

If you use our guide, just rely on him and follow his instructions. If he tells you to sit somewhere and wait, just sit and wait, even if the hall empties out! Have confidence!

As I write this I am sitting on the ferry which I was the first to board, via the car entrance. Officials had (albeit suspiciously) accepted the line of my guide (who shall remain nameless) that I was semi-invalid so I limped happily up the gang-plank and remembered not to break into a run at the top. I’ve had a fabulous three days but as I collapse into my seat for the return journey I vow (as I do every single time) not to go again for a long time …. BUT I SHALL. For me, it has a special ‘magic’.
