Kite Surfing Tarifa - Courses

Your instructor will give you a theoretical part on the wind direction and the powerzone as well as how to stear the kite and when to let it go. Once the theoretical part (sounds boring - but is actually very interesting) is done you will start flying the kite together with a team mate. The courses are always given is small groups.

Our personal recommendation:

Club Mistral & Skyriders has 2 kite and windsurfing centers in Tarifa. Club Mistral centre at the Valdevaqueros Hotel is a suitable spot for windsurfing beginners and intermediates, and Mistral offers first-rate instruction and rental options to kitesurfers, who have their own dedicated area separate from the windsurfers' zone.

Kite Surfing Tarifa - Courses and duration

1. Starter - level K1 - 1 day - between 2 to 4 hours

A short course requiring only 1 day at the beach, during which you will learn the basics of kitesurfing:

Safety
The different parts of the kite
How to fly the kite
Wind window theory
Safety release systems
Fundamental meteorology

2. Beginners - level K2 - 2 days

This course takes approx. 6 to 8 hours in total over the course of 2 days. The objective is to learn the basics in order to become a self-sufficient kite-surfer.

1st part: Learn how to fly the kite

Practical: Learn to control the kite on the beach
Material: Safety systems, safety gear and correct kite assembly
Piloting: The static and dynamic wind windows, practise drills on the beach

2nd part: Getting wet!

Now you will have your first contact with the water in the form of a body-drag.
You repeat the drills learned on the beach but now in the water.
You learn how to maintain control of the kite in the water with 1 or 2 hands.
You will simulate a board recovery and prepare for the water-start.

3. Medium Level - level K3 - 3 to 4 days

This course takes approx. 12 to 18 hours in total over the course of 3 to 4 days. Includes all elements required to sail to 2nd level standard.

The objectives are:

Water start
Basic navigation
Water re-launching and self rescue
Return to beach.

You will learn to sail relative to all points of the wind; close handed, reaching and running.

4. Advanced level - Level K4 - 6 days

This course takes approx. 24 hours in total over 6 days. Included all elements required to sail to 3rd standard. The objective is to become a highly competent kitesurfer.

Specific exercises to refine tacking techniques, to make all basic manoeuvres more dynaic and to introduce basic jumping.
